Are you looking for talent that’s not looking for you?

UK industries are experiencing a real lack of talent and a greater need to sell themselves to candidates than ever before. So what can we do about it? And more specifically, how do you attract a candidate that might not even be looking for a job right now?

From the moment Barbie was created by Mattel in 1959 she has enjoyed numerous careers, showing young girls that they can aspire to be anything they want to be.

In this blog post we discuss Barbie’s impact on influencing non-linear careers and how that a trend is influencing employment habits across the globe.

Employer Branding

The notion of ‘employer branding’ is now firmly mainstream and business leaders recognise that they need to market themselves as attractive employers to draw the very best talent to their team. For this to work you need to ensure that your brand truly represents your organisation, that everyone in your organisation lives and breathes it, and that it’s marketed to your target hires in the most effective way.

Here are our top five tips to both attract and persuade that next ‘dream hire’ to join your team.

70% of the global workforce are passive job seekers

Randstad, 2022

1. Build a strong employer brand

Build a strong employer brand, clearly communicating your organisation’s values and culture, and what makes you different from your competition. You need to make sure this truly represents who you are and involve a good cross-section of your team in its development.

2. Showcase your company’s mission and impact

People are attracted to organizations that are making a positive impact in society so highlight your company’s mission, corporate social responsibility initiatives, and all of those generally ‘good human’ efforts you’re involved in. Demonstrating a commitment to making a difference can attract candidates who align with your values and are looking for more meaningful work.

3. Professional growth opportunities

Emphasize the potential for career advancement, skill development, and training programs within your organization. Passive candidates may be more inclined to consider a move if they see the potential for personal and professional growth.
From the moment Barbie was created by Mattel in 1959 she has enjoyed numerous careers, showing young girls that they can aspire to be anything they want to be. Barbie has been a fashion model, a doctor, a teacher, an athlete, an architect, an astronaut and more.
Indeed, whatever your hobbies and ambitions there was usually a Barbie with a full range of accessories to show you the way (aesthetically at least).  Over the last decade Barbie has gone to greater lengths to align with evolving cultural and social values, and we’ve seen a number of STEM field Barbies, some entrepreneurs and even a UNICEF ambassador.
We applaud Barbie for inspiring girls to dream big, challenge societal expectations, and pursue any profession they choose, but how do we feel about ‘multiple career Barbie’ and what is she doing for the employers of today?  Non-linear careers are extremely common now and the traditional notion of a single career path has evolved for a variety of reasons.

4. Become brand ambassadors

Leverage your existing employees and encourage them to become brand ambassadors with video testimonials, social media activity and networking. This can help create a positive buzz and attract potential candidates who may not be actively job hunting.

5. Become a thought leader in your industry

Establish your company as thought leaders in your industry. Publish articles and share expertise through webinars or podcasts and contribute to all relevant online forums. Share valuable industry insights, offer guidance, and build relationships with potential candidates. By establishing yourself as a knowledgeable and helpful resource, you increase the chances of attracting their interest when they do decide to make a career move.
Attracting top talent requires a proactive and engaging approach, and establishing a positive reputation is key. By showcasing your company’s strengths, culture, and unique opportunities, you’ll increase your chances of capturing the attention of talented people who may not be actively job-hunting.
Be patient, genuine, and showcase the unique opportunities your organization can provide. It’s not rocket science, and just takes a bit of time, effort, and creativity – all of which we can help you with here at B-role.
